NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh on the Future of Laurentian University
NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh holds a virtual news conference urging federal action to help save Laurentian University. The Sudbury, Ontario, institution is terminating 58 undergraduate and 11 graduate programs as well as roughly 110 staff positions as it restructures amid insolvency. He is joined by northern Ontario New Democrats Charlie Angus (Timmins--James Bay) and Carol Hughes (Algoma--Manitoulin--Kapuskasing). The NDP leader will be meeting with workers at the university and Sudbury Mayor Brian Bigger following his news conference. Following a request by Angus, MPs recently held an emergency debate in the House of the Commons on the situation facing the university. It is the only public institution with a mandate to support francophone, Indigenous and anglophone communities. (April 16, 2021) (no interpretation)
