Saskatchewan Commits $2 Million for Residential School Site Searches
Don McMorris, Saskatchewan’s minister responsible for First Nations, Métis and northern affairs, announces his government is providing $2 million to the Federation of Sovereign Indian Nations (FSIN) to support searches for unmarked graves at former residential school sites in the province. He is joined by Bobby Cameron, chief of the FSIN. The announcement comes in the wake of the recent confirmation of the existence of 215 unmarked graves at the site of the Kamloops Indian Residential School in British Columbia. The FSIN has called on the federal government to search all residential school sites in Saskatchewan for unmarked burial sites. The provincial government says it supports the FSIN’s request and has called on the federal government to match Saskatchewan’s investment. (June 18, 20210) (no interpretation)
