Senate Convenes to Consider Student-Aid Legislation – May 1, 2020
The Senate convenes to consider Bill C-15, the federal government’s legislation that would implement financial assistance measures for students during the COVID-19 (coronavirus disease) pandemic. The House of Commons adopted the bill at all stages during its special sitting on April 29. Senators also observe a moment of silence for the victims of the April 18-19 attacks in Nova Scotia, and for the crew members who were on board the Canadian Armed Forces helicopter that crashed during a NATO training exercise off the coast of Greece on April 29. Sitting as a committee of the whole, senators question Carla Qualtrough, minister of employment, workforce development and disability inclusion, and Graham Flack, deputy minister of employment and social development, on the measures contained in Bill C-15. The legislation is passed without amendments and also receives royal assent.
