Algonquin Nation Calls for Equal Partnership with Indigenous Peoples’ Space
Representatives of ten Algonquin Nations from Ontario and Quebec hold a news conference in Ottawa to outline their concerns with the future space for Indigenous peoples that will be established in the nation's capital. They are disappointed about the refusal of the federal government, the Assembly of First Nations (AFN), the Metis National Council (MNC) and Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami (ITK) to include Algonquins as full and equal partners in the space, even though the project sits on the ancestral land of the Algonquin people. The former U.S. embassy across from Parliament Hill will be redeveloped as a cultural centre or gallery. The redevelopment was announced in June 2017 by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
