Chief Mike Sack of the Sipekne'katik First Nation speaks with reporters in Saulnierville, Nova Scotia, about the fire in Middle West Pubnico that destroyed a facility used by Mi’kmaq lobster fishers. Yarmouth County RCMP says the fire is considered suspicious and an investigation is ongoing. A man is in hospital with life-threatening injuries believed to be related to the fire, which occurred around midnight. The same facility was also raided and vandalized by non-Indigenous commercial fishers earlier in the week, amid an ongoing dispute over a Mi’kmaq-owned fishery. The fishery opened in September outside of the federally regulated season, based on a 1999 Supreme Court of Canada decision that affirmed the Mi'kmaq had a right to operate a moderate livelihood fishery.
