Ridings to Watch
Fredericton
CPAC’s Martin Stringer reports on the riding of Fredericton, New Brunswick where the Liberal incumbent, Matt DeCourcey is in a fight against two impressive challengers: Andrea Johnson for the Conservatives and Jenica Atwin of the Green Party. Frequent flooding of the St. John river has made climate change a major issue in this riding, but so has the recent closure of the province’s only private abortion clinic, and the fact that the riding is in a Maritime province with a resource economy brings its own set of issues. Mackenzie Thomason, the 22-year-old leader of the provincial NDP, is the New Democrat on the ballot. Jason Paull is the People’s Party candidate.
Saint John–Rothesay and Fundy Royal
CPAC’s Bill Kendrick visits southern New Brunswick, where the Conservatives look to turn two Liberal seats blue. Fundy Royal, a riding that has always voted Conservative except for two occasions in 1993 and again in 2015, is currently held by the Liberal Alaina Lockhart. Her principal adversary is Rob Moore, who held the seat previously for the Conservatives from 2004 to 2015. Tim Thompson is the Green candidate here and James Tolan is the New Democrat. Next to Fundy Royal is the riding of Saint John-Rothesay, where voters will see a rematch between Liberal candidate Wayne Long and Conservative candidate Rodney Weston. Weston held the seat for two terms before Long rode the Trudeau wave to victory in 2015. Armand Cormier is the New Democrat and Ann McAllister is the Green Party’s candidate.
