Ridings to Watch
York Centre
CPAC’s Laura DiBattista reports on the Toronto riding of York Centre. In 2015 the Liberals with Michael Levitt as their candidate won the riding by less than 1500 votes and the Conservatives feel they have a chance to pick this up. Their candidate is Rachel Willson, a trained teacher and vice-president of the Philos Project. The New Democrat is long time community organizer Andrea Vasquez Jimenez and Rebecca Wood, an entrepreneur and professional photographer is the Green Party candidate.
Whitby
CPAC’s Laura DiBattista reports on the race in Whitby, Ontario, the one-time seat of former Harper finance minister Jim Flaherty. In 2015, the riding switched to Liberal red and elected Celina Caesar-Chavannes, a promising star for the party until this spring when she had a fallout with the leader, resigned from the party and decided not to run as an independent. The Liberal candidate this time is Ryan Turnbull, an entrepreneur and founder of Eco-Ethonomics. The Conservative Todd McCarthy is a trial lawyer and law professor at Queen’s. Brian Dias, the New Democrat, works at Fiat Chrysler’s Etobicoke plant and is active with Unifor Local 1459. The retired anestheologist at Oshawa’s Lakeridge Health, Dr. Paul Slavchenko, is the Green candidate.
Newmarket–Aurora
CPAC’s Laura DiBattista reports on the Ontario riding of Newmarket-Aurora where with the retirement of Liberal Kyle Peterson there is no incumbent. The Liberal candidate is the long time mayor of Newmarket Tony Van Bynen who will be facing off against Conservative Lois Brown who was the MP here from 2008 until she lost to Mr Peterson by less than 1500 votes in 2015. The Green Party candidate is Walter Bauer and Yvonne Kelly, a community organizer and anti-poverty advocate is the NDP candidate.
Peterborough–Kawartha
CPAC’s Charelle Evelyn reports on the Central Ontario bellwether riding of Peterborough–Kawartha. Voters here have voted for the member from the governing party in every election since 1984. Maryam Monsef, the minister of international development, is facing off against Conservative Michael Skinner, who finished second to Monsef in 2015. The New Democrat is Candace Shaw and Andrew MacGregor is the Green Party candidate.
Windsor West
CPAC’s Laura DiBattista looks at the riding of Windsor West where the introduction of star Liberal candidate Sandra Pupatello has made an otherwise safe NDP seat a riding to watch. Ms. Pupatello is a former Liberal MPP and finished second to Kathleen Wynne for the Ontario Liberal leadership in 2013. Her main adversary is Brian Masse, the veteran New Democrat who has held this riding since winning it in a byelection in 2002. The Conservative is Henry Lau and Quinn Hunt is the Green Party candidate; both have been a part of the city’s iconic auto industry, which is facing many challenges on several fronts and is a key election issue in this southwestern Ontario riding.
King–Vaughan and Brampton East
CPAC’s Charelle Evelyn takes a look at the race in two suburban Toronto 905 ridings that could play pivotal roles on election day. Affordability, jobs and crime are all major issues in Brampton East where a wide open race is expected after the Liberal, Raj Grewal, was removed from caucus for his gambling addiction. He was replaced on the ballot by Maninder Sidhu, a trade consultant. The NDP candidate is Saranjit Singh, a labour lawyer. Ramona Singh, an entrepreneur, is the Conservative. The issues are similar in neighbouring King–Vaughan where the incumbent Liberal Deborah Schulte, a former city councillor and aerospace engineer, is facing a stiff challenge from former bank manager and mortgage agent Anna Roberts for the Conservatives. The Green candidate is consulting engineer Anne Raney.
St. Catharines
CPAC’s Laura DiBattista takes a look at the bellwether riding of St. Catharines, Ontario, a riding that has voted for the government since 1984. This industrial town in the Niagara region on the shores of Lake Ontario is home to the GM propulsion plant that employs nearly 700 and Brock University with an enrollment of nearly 19,000 students. Chris Bittle, the incumbent Liberal, is being challenged by Kristina Waler of the Conservatives and Dennis Van Meer, the UNIFOR local vice-president, is running for the NDP. Travis Mason, a letter carrier with Canada Post, is the Green Party candidate.
Oakville North–Burlington and Mississauga–Streetsville
CPAC’s Laura DiBattista reports on two 905 ridings outside of Toronto that could help determine whether the Liberals are re-elected to a majority or if Andrew Scheer’s Conservatives take power. In Oakville North–Burlington, the Liberal incumbent is Pam Damoff, who won in 2015 by just over 2,000 votes. Her main challenger is the Conservative Sean Weir, a partner and vice-chair at one of this country’s biggest law firms, Borden Laidner Gervais. In Mississauga–Streetsville, the incumbent Liberal is Gagan Sikand, who defeated the Conservative by just over 4,000 votes in 2015. This time around the Conservatives have nominated a new opponent, Ghada Melek, a senior manager at Deloitte. Samir Girguism, a family therapist, is the New Democrat. Chris Hill, a fleet manager for the city of Hamilton, is the Green Party candidate.
Parkdale–High Park
The Toronto riding of Parkdale–High Park has flipped back and forth between the Liberals and NDP for the last 4 elections, and if it were up to Paul Taylor it would flip one more time. The executive director of Toronto’s Foodshare is running under the NDP banner and is campaigning on the issue of affordable housing. The Liberal and incumbent is Arif Virani, a lawyer who was appointed to parliamentary secretary for justice in the Trudeau government. Real estate agent Adam Pham is the Conservative and small-business owner Nick Capra is the Green Party’s candidate. CPAC’S Charelle Evelyn reports.
