Campaign Politics
P.E.I. 2019 Provincial Election
On April 23 voters in Prince Edward Island will be asked two questions: who do they want to lead the province for the next 4 years and should they change the voting system to mixed-member proportional representation? Premier Wade MacLauchlan has been leading the Liberal government in Charlottetown since 2015 and even though the province of 153,000 owns the nation’s hottest economy, MacLauchlan’s personal popularity numbers are down and the opposition parties are smelling an opportunity. In P.E.I.’s case, the official Opposition isn’t the main beneficiary - rather it’s the second opposition party, the Greens with their Scottish-born dentist turned politician Peter Bevan-Baker as leader, who is running ahead in the polls. The Progressive-Conservatives under Dennis King, the party’s fifth leader in the past 8 years, has been bogged down by political infighting and the NDP under Joe Byrne is trying to win its first seat since 1996. CPAC’s Bill Kendrick has the story from Charlottetown.

P.E.I. 2015 Provincial Election
Voters in Canada's smallest province go to the polls May 4, to determine if newly minted Liberal leader Wade MacLauchlan will retain the Liberals hold on the 27 seat legislature. The Liberals, who have been in power since 2007, when 33 year old Robert Ghiz defeated Pat Binns after 11 years of Progressive Conservative government, believe that despite some scandals in recent years, their chances are strong with the former president of the University of Prince Edward Island. The Progressive Conservatives, on the other hand, believe that with newly elected leader Rob Lantz, they can overcome the party's own problems with dissension and infighting, and present a campaign that will appeal to the province's 100,000 voters. The NDP, under leader Mike Redmond, is trying to win its first seat since 1996 and the Green Party, under leader Peter Bevan Baker, is hoping that the presence of the Federal party's leadership during the campaign will help its cause. CPAC's Brian Dubreuil has the story from Prince Edward Island.
