Experts Discuss Middle East Security and Human Rights in Iran
The Institute For Peace and Diplomacy holds an event in Ottawa featuring experts from Canada and the U.S. to discuss the situation on the ground in Iran as well as the geopolitical implications of the ongoing tensions in the region. Tara Sepehri Far (Iran researcher from Human Rights Watch) speaks on the first panel, which is titled "Iran people stuck between repression and sanctions". The second panel focuses on whether recent tensions between Iran and the U.S. will lead to another war in the Middle East and features Mahsa Rouhi (research fellow, Non-Proliferation and Nuclear Policy Programme, The International Institute for Strategic Studies) and Thomas Juneau (associate professor, Graduate School of Public and International Affairs, University of Ottawa). Having been Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunals for the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, and justice of the Supreme Court of Canada, Ms. Arbour is known around the world for her relentless pursuit of justice. Pierre Donais interviewed her during one of her trips to Ottawa.

Nelson Mandela's visit to Canada in 1998
Nelson Mandela, the president of South Africa, makes a state visit to Canada, September 23–25, 1998. Arriving in Ottawa on September 23, Mandela speaks at a welcoming ceremony and answers questions from the press. On September 24, he participates in the unveiling of a plaque at Ottawa’s human rights monument in commemoration of the fiftieth anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, addresses a joint sitting of the Senate and the House of Commons, holds a press conference alongside Prime Minister Jean Chrétien, and is named as an honorary Companion of the Order of Canada by Governor General Roméo LeBlanc. Mandela’s visit concludes on September 25th with a public event at SkyDome in Toronto, Ont., where Lincoln Alexander, the former lieutenant-governor of Ontario, is among the attendees.

Are Justice, the Responsibility to Protect and Peacekeeping Missions Contributing to Peace?" This event is hosted by the Centre for International Policy Studies at the University of Ottawa. Mary Robinson is currently President of the Mary Robinson Foundation - Climate Justice. Robinson also served as the first female President of Ireland from 1990 to 1997 and as the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights from 1997 to 2002. This talk was presented by CIPS, HRREC and the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs at the University of Ottawa.

Preventing Discrimination The Canadian Human Rights Commission held the 2010 Discrimination Prevention Forum from November 23rd to 25th in Winnipeg. The theme was: "Circle of Awareness - Cycle of Growth" with a special focus on Aboriginal issues. This opening session included a keynote address by Phil Fontaine, former national chief of the Assembly of First Nations.
