L'Essentiel with Esther Bégin
Impacts of Bill 96 - May 25, 2021
The Bloc Québécois will table a motion in the House of Commons this week to measure the real support of federal MPs for Bill 96, the reform of Bill 101. We discuss it with MPs Greg Fergus (LIB), Pierre Paul-Hus (CPC), Andréanne Larouche (BQ) and Alexandre Boulerice (NDP). Esther Bégin discusses the impact of Quebec's Bill 96 on Francophone minority communities with political scientists Stéphanie Chouinard in Toronto and Frédéric Boily in Edmonton. In particular, they talk to us about the consequences of the offer to reduce university tuition fees to Francophones living outside Quebec. The two political scientists also analyze the declining popularity of Premiers Doug Ford and Jason Kenney and the effect it will have on Conservative leader Erin O’Toole. The vaccination strategy for the second dose in Quebec, the province's deconfinement plan, the recommendation to administer a second dose of a different vaccine, the false sense of security in the face of the pandemic when very few Canadians have received their second doses… We discuss all of this with Dr. Nathalie Grandvaux, specialist in molecular medicine and professor at the University of Montreal.
