National defense officials and industry leaders from around the world will gather in Halifax this weekend for the 17th annual Halifax International Security Forum. The event is closely watched for its discussions among democratic allies on collective defense and global conflicts, but one absence will be notable this year: that of senior White House officials. To discuss this absence and the threats facing democratic states, Marc-André Cossette welcomes Chief of the Defense Staff General Jennie Carignan. We now know a little more about the crisis shaking the Quebec Liberal Party. According to 98.5, Marwah Rizqy responded yesterday evening to the formal notice sent by her former chief of staff, Geneviève Hinse. In a letter sent by her lawyer, Ms. Rizqy states that Ms. Hinse was dismissed “due to significant ethical breaches,” also citing repeated acts of insubordination, according to 98.5. After convening his caucus today in Montreal, leader Pablo Rodriguez maintained that he had never been informed of any misconduct within his party and threatened to sue Le Journal de Montréal to find out who wrote the text messages published by the daily earlier this week. To take stock of this crisis and other issues that marked the week, Marc-André Cossette is joined by our analysts Christine St-Pierre, former Liberal minister in the National Assembly, Rodolphe Husny, former political advisor to the Harper government, and Kristina Michaud, former Bloc Québécois MP for Avignon—La Mitis—Matane—Matapédia. Minister Mark Carney arrived in South Africa today to attend the G20 Leaders' Summit. During his visit to Johannesburg, he is expected to continue his efforts to promote Canada as a prime destination for foreign investment, as he did in the United Arab Emirates in recent days, where he secured $70 billion in investments. Mr. Carney hopes to advance several trade issues at the G20, where discussions will take on a different tone since U.S. President Donald Trump will be absent from the summit. To discuss this, we are joined by Louise Blais, former ambassador and deputy permanent representative of Canada to the UN from 2017 to 2021.
